Braille Awareness Coordinator

With over 300 employees and around 2,000 volunteers the Blind Foundation is New Zealand’s leading provider of services and support to people who are blind or have low vision. Celebrating 127 years, we are one of New Zealand’s most trusted and iconic Not for Profit organisations.  We need a Braille Awareness Coordinator to join us. You will help the organisation achieve our vision of empowering and supporting New Zealanders who are blind or who have low vision.

We currently have a vacancy for a Braille Awareness Coordinator, position location negotiable. This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), permanent position.  The position will play a critical part in assisting the Foundation to raise awareness of issues affecting blind, deafblind and vision-impaired people through the delivery of awareness training, employer education and initiating and assisting with work experience programmes. You will be responsible for coordinating and promoting Braille services nationwide, ensuring consistency and quality of service delivery, heightening the awareness of Braille and its application throughout the whole of life.

What we are looking for:

  • A passion for Braille

  • Have attained or be willing to attain the Trans-Tasman Certificate of Proficiency in Unified English Braille and be a regular braille user

  • A knowledge of blindness (vision impairment) and understanding of issues that impact upon people experiencing disability, in particular vision loss

  • Experience in developing and delivering training programmes

  • Strong communication and public speaking skills and the ability to relate at all levels

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (report writing, proposals, programme reporting)

  • Good computer skills including Word, Excel & Outlook

  • Strong planning and organisational skills
